The Sinematif Film Workshop at Giresun University’s Tirebolu Faculty of Communication has launched a new series of events to bring together film-loving students. Through monthly film screenings, students will have the opportunity to watch and discuss a wide range of films, from classics of Turkish cinema to modern productions.

Students from the Tirebolu Faculty of Communication at Giresun University, under the guidance of Assistant Professor Elif Çanğa Bayer and in collaboration with our faculty’s workshops, have launched a new cultural event. The first screening in the series featured “Çiçek Abbas,” one of Turkish cinema’s unforgettable films. Following the screening, a brief discussion on early Turkish cinema was held with Dr. Zafer Akar from the Radio, Television, and Cinema Department. The Film Workshop team thanked all the faculty members and students who contributed to the event.

“The event is open to all faculty students”

Dr. Elif Çanğa Bayer, who described the conceptual phase of the event, explained that the project emerged entirely from the students’ initiative with the following words:

“First, at a film workshop meeting, a group of film students proposed organizing a film screening event. We planned for the event to be open to all students in the faculty. We then shared the idea with students at our faculty’s news agency, and they took on the task of covering the event. Our faculty’s advertising agency also took on a role in the announcement and organizational process. In this way, through a collaborative effort, we developed this idea into a joint workshop event. We were truly delighted by the students’ strong sense of ownership.”

Dr. Elif Çanğa Bayer, an Assistant Professor, stated that the goal was to bring a shared cultural event to our faculty where students from the Radio, Television, and Cinema, Journalism, Public Relations, and Publicity departments could both develop their professional skills and socialize. Elif Çanğa Bayer added, “Each department will have the opportunity to showcase skills specific to their discipline; some will write news articles, some will design posters, and others will analyze films.”

“Film Days will continue on a regular monthly basis”

Dr. Elif Çanğa Bayer, noting that Çiçek Abbas—selected for the first screening—is one of Yeşilçam’s unforgettable films, explained the reason for this choice as follows:

“One of Yeşilçam’s unforgettable films. It is also significant because director Sinan Çetin, who was still in his twenties at the time, brought to life a screenplay written by Yavuz Turgul as his first feature-length film. This film demonstrates to young filmmakers that it is possible to make a film even with limited resources.”

Dr. Bayer, an Assistant Professor, stated that the Film Days will continue on a regular monthly basis, noting that the film “Atatürk 1881-1919” will be screened in November and that the events are planned in conjunction with significant dates.

Full support from Tirebolu Faculty of Communication students

Students participating in the event stated that “Film Days” provides a significant contribution to the faculty both professionally and socially. Student Beyza Tekin noted that the development and implementation of such an event by the Tirebolu Faculty of Communication is highly valuable to them, saying, “These types of activities are very valuable and equally enjoyable both for the students and for our faculty.” Participants also mentioned that the discussions held after the film screenings were both educational and engaging.
